The Good Design Award was founded in 1957 by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (presently the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), to recognize that good design is essential and indispensable to everyday life. Approximately 1,200 awards are issued annually with about 44,000 awards presented over the last 60 years. In 2017, 1,403 products were presented the Good Design Award out of a total of 4,495 applications, making 2017 the year with the most applications since 1985. Among the winners, the best 100 were selected by the committee and embody the very essence of the Good Design award. These products are unique, aesthetically pleasing and provide a consistent and identifiable design philosophy. The "Veraview X800" was further honored with its selection as one of these outstanding best 100 products this year.
