Alternative choice for Root canal treatment

Water-based calcium hydroxide paste

Advantages:

1-Easy to handle, Single-component paste

Stable paste without separation or solidification in a syringe
Easy and direct application into the root canals
Highly flowable paste to plug the apical canals.
Easy removal from the root canals with alternative irrigation with a sodium hypochlorite solution and a hydrogen peroxide solution.

2-Excellent biocompatibility

  • Less irritation to the periapical tissues

  • The paste is composed of resorbable ingredient so it does not disturb healing of apical lesion and hard tissue formation.

3-Can be applied to the intractable cases of infected root canals

  • It is reported that water-based calcium hydroxide can stop exudates.

  • The effect of calcium hydroxide lasts over a long period.

  • Moderately radiopaque.

Experiment and result:

Test materials: Calcipex and Product A (oil-based calcium hydroxide paste)

The effect of the materials on the tissue responses were histologically evaluated after restoration in the bone cavity with apicetomy. Inflammatory reaction was not observed in the tissue and new bone regeneration was found in direct contact around Calcipex. In the case of product A, a lot of vacuole, conceivably composed of silicone oil, were observed in the bone cavity.
