 About Dr. Welk

Dr. Welk has been spent time in the past as a part time faculty member with the OHSU Department of Endodontics working with dental students and endodontic residents.  He has been in private practice since 2002.  He has taught courses on endodontics for local dental societies, Oregon Academy of General Dentistry, and AAE demonstration courses.  He has experience with podcast and web presentations on endodontic topics.

Dr. Welk has been using J. Morita Root ZX technology since 1996.  He has used cordless electric handpieces to provide endodontic treatment to patients since 2002 and started using Morita designed handpiece technology in 2017.  Dr. Welk has used the Tri Auto ZX2 handpiece in his private practice beginning in February 2018.

He has written technique articles and opinions on the use of the cordless handpiece technology in Dental Products Report.  During his endodontic residency, his research was based on electronic apex locator technology:  An in vivo comparison of two frequency-based electronic apex locators. J Endodon, 29:8, p497-500, August 2003.

Dr. Welk and his team are “Working Together To Save Smiles” and to learn more about his work and his practice, visit https://www.cascadeendo.com/

Dr. Aaron Welk Shares His Experience with the Tri Auto ZX2

1. Do you find the 8 set programs on the Tri Auto ZX2 a bit overwhelming for first-time users? When you explain, how do you balance complexity and functionality?

I think the 8 present programs can be overwhelming for a new user.  I try to only focus on the first four settings:
M1 – EMR: Pure apex locator only use
M2 – Clockwise rotation gate glidden type use
M3 – OGP glide path use
M4 – OTR rotary file use

The M8 – Counterclockwise is a feature that I don’t think most clinicians use with injectable type pastes available but it is necessary to have as a feature. That leave M5, M6, M7 as the “advanced use” presets on the handpiece.
When I use the handpiece, I rarely use the advanced presets either.

2. With this simpler approach, how has the feedback been overall?

When focusing on the first four presets, I don’t find that participants get that confused. I just sat through a case presentation master class with a group from the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry recently, after leading a hands-on endodontic course in May.  I was impressed with the feedback from a couple of dentists who bought Tri Auto ZX2 handpieces after the course.  Their feedback was very positive.  They also commented on how much they liked using gates gliddens in the handpiece as part of their instrumentation sequence.  One dentist shared he was a little tentative to use the OTR setting as he wasn't totally comfortable with the reverse action, but was eager to keep using and give him time to adjust as he gets comfortable with the technology.

3. Do you find that participants understand the difference between reciprocation and OTR? How do you approach this explanation to people who are not well familiar with the technology or the differences in the file systems?

I think it is well received.  I believe a majority of clinicians use full rotary (OTR) compared with reciprocation (OGP), unless they have been trained in a dental program that teaches reciprocal instrumentation (as OHSU teaches) where they teach dental students to use the WaveOne reciprocating system.

4. Do you spend time discussing the different technologies and file systems available? How do you approach this explanation to people who are not well familiar with them?

With respect to using the handpiece technology vs different systems, I haven’t spent time focusing on talking about that with dentists.  Everyone seems to have their preference, and I have steered clear of deep discussions about that.

Dr. Welk, thank you so much for your time and we hope you have a very successful workshop.
