In order to provide a favorable learning environment to trainees, the SIMROID is equipped with interacting and key components that allows students to learn and record their training. This enables an noticeable improvement in their basic technique as well as communication skills.

Key components

1.Touch Panel Monitor -         GUI Software

Displays operation windows, CCD camera images, etc. The monitor is a touch panel easy to use for trainings, and operated with a designated touch pan.

 2. Wireless headset Microphone

Students wear this headset. Speaking through the headset allows the robot patient to respond or react with the voice recognition function.
 3. Computer and connection kit The SIMROID software is installed here. The system controls the robot patient, creates scenarios, as well as records/replays/compares/exports the data.
 4. Robot Patient Simulates human behavior and reactions. This robot allows interactive trainings. With its built-in sensor, it reacts sensitively to treatment actions, and with its voice recognition function, it acts or speaks in response to the student's speech. Its super-realistic appearance also provides a true-to-life atmosphere to the training.
5. Treatment unit (EMCIA or Soaric) Supports the robot patient. If your chair unit has a chair seat and head rest for medical treatment, replace them with those designated for the SIMROID.
6. CCD Cameras x 2 Images from the overhead CCD and horizontal CCD cameras are displayed lined up in the LCD monitor.

Operation Flow

SIMROID's software allows for an easy operation flow for better educational training:

  1. Recording: Data recording
  2. Playback: Select recording data
  3. Comparison: Select playback data for comparison
  4. Export: Data export
  5. Scenario: Scenario menu
  6. Register/Set: Register/setting menu
  7. Self-Learning: Recording (SelfLearn)
  8. Change Jaw: Change jaw mode

The main feature of the training system SIMROID resides in its high resemblance with a human through its body as well as communication. The SIMROID was created and designed in order to closely mimic the typical human behaviors such as facial expressions, hand, leg, speech and other body movements.

SIMROID's super-realistic appearance and reactions (in expression, motion, and speech) often confuses visitors and doctors the robot with a real human-being.

The realism of this training robot enables trainees and university students become more comfortable with dealing with real patients. Through close-to-real interaction with a robot, the trainees learn to handle in a realistically manner that allows for mistakes as well as improvement.

SIMROID is equipped with parts activated through air driven cylinders, enabling appropriate reaction to discomfort or pain, or even positive aknoweldgement.

  1. Eye lids ( up - down )
  2. Eyes ( up - down)
  3. Eyes ( left - right )
  4. Mouth ( open - close )
  5. Neck ( left - right )
  6. Neck ( forward - back )

This cutting-edge humanoid robot patient is equipped with 2 CCD allowing a full session recording to make sure nothing is overlooked. The student is able to record trainings according to his guidance, while controling the robot patient's reactions.

A monitor is located within the field of view of the student, for a live-monitoring of the training as well as recording for later review purposes. This allows for adequate posture adjustment, ensuring a more comfortable operation environment for the real patient.

The CCD arm cameras are located at the front to face the trainee, and also in the ceiling to record the oral cavity.

                                                 Front camera for session recording

Ceiling camera for recording oral cavity

The software allows for an easy-to-operate operation flow as described below:

  1. Recording
  2. Playback
  3. Comparison
  4. Export

The SIMROID is a simulation system to practice various treatment techniques and communication skills using a highly realistic robot patient. To take full advantage of the "interactivity" of the SIMROID system, the concept of scenarios was devised. They are operated semi-automatically with voice recognition , allowing the trainee to have a realistic and lively training session.

The scenarios of the SIMROID describe training flows, student speech/actions, as well as the robot patient reactions (in speech/actions), following particular stories. As the system comes equipped with 27 types of OSCE-compliant scenarios (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations), the user can train with the scenarios immediately after system installation.

Moreover, the trainee is offered with the capacity to edit an exisitng scenario or create a new scenario, by combining and customizing them.

This allows the students to work independetly with the robot patient, reducing the need for physical and constant monitoring by a supervisor. The trainee involves in an autonomous training, where problem-solving and critical thinking abilities are built and improved.

Example of a SIMROID training scenario:

A crucial feature of this educational system is the ability to review previously recorded training operations. After recording a dental simulation with the SIMROID, both the trainee and the teacher could compare it with a real operation and assess signs of improvement or deterioration.

For an effective feedback, the SIMROID offers the students and teachers the ability to compare past and current recordings by viewing:

  1. Robot movements and sensor triggers
  2. Recording 1
  3. Recording 2

Another valuable feature is the system's ability to play back 2 recordings simultaneously to analyze variations and evaluate performance. This function makes it easier to compare with previously recordered data and recognize improvement of trainee's speech, behaviour and skills.
